An iMac DV 400 MHz (slot-loading), upgraded from its stock 10Gb HD
to a Maxtor 6Y160PO (160 Gb HD).
The Maxtor was partitioned with 10Gb for OS 9.2.2, a scratch disk
for PhotoShop, and the rest for OS 10.3
Checked RAM-specs (with "DIMM First Aid") and upgraded firmware
before OSX as specified by Apple.
This HD setup worked well for a few months, though the built-in
CD-ROM didn't respond properly anymore. The owner mainly use an
external CD-drive anyway, so checking this out wasn't a big priority
for my overbooked Mac support time.
But now suddenly the machine won't boot from the HD, but boots OK
from CD (in the internal drive!). Disk First Aid in OS9 can't see
the HD at all. Disk Tools on the 10.3 install disk sees the drive,
but all Verify and Repair-buttons are greyed out. The HD doesn't
show up in Startup Disk control panels (neither in OS9 nor 10.3)
The CD-ROM trouble made me think I had done an error in setting
Master/Slave. But now I wonder; OS9 Disk Tools shows the following:
Type Buss ID LUN
HD ATA 2 0 0
CD ATAPI 2 1 0
The ID shows the master/slave setting, doesn't it? In that case they
are different. What is that LUN thing?
Yes, ID is M/S. LUN is Logical Unit number. It is used to
differentiate multiple devices connected via a single ID. I don't
even know if IDE supports this. In SCSI you can have a single CD-ROM
tower that is a single SCSI address but has multiple CD-ROM drives.
The LUN is different for each drive. In almost every drive you see,
SCSI or IDE, it will be 0.
