How do I format a new external firewire/usb drive to do back ups and
share/transport Word and other MS Office docs between a Mac and a PC?

Format the drive as a FAT32 partition.

The Mac can read Windows formatted discs, but at a very basic level.

As a test, I just formatted a Zip disc on a XP box, made a directory and placed a file on it.

My Mac (OS 10.4.2) read it just fine.
