Nah, I just throw out useless information like anniversary dates,
tonights shopping list, neighbor's names.. :-)
Actually I have a great memory for useless trivia. My wife ran across
the word 'palipmsest' in a news article the other day, asked me to
look it up since I had the Powerbook right next to me. She was amazed
when I rattled off the definition without even opening the 'Book.
Some people have great powers of persuasion, some have brilliant
intellects, some can write symphonies of unsurpassed beauty....I can
remember useless factoids!
Pretty sucky superpower, all things considered ;-)
I also long ago developed a pretty good research habit..a wise
teacher of mine once taught us that it's not really necessary to know
ANYthing, merely where to look it up. Since that's a heck of a lot
easier than memorizing things (which also leaves head space for
useless trivia ;-) I took that advice to heart. Google is my friend.
(Palimpsest n. A document that has been erased and overwritten, with
some of the original document still visible. This was quite commonly
done in the Dark and Middle ages where parchment was extremely
valuable; the monks would erase older greek and roman texts to copy
their latin stuff onto.
In many cases, with modern imaging technologies, it's possible to
recover the older texts from 'underneath' the overlay.
From the Greek for "Rubbed Smooth Again" ...though I cheated and
looked it up in Tiger's dictionary for the origin...)
