Any inkjet that has a Mac serial connector is probably going to be used
and getting close to the end of it's usable life. As far as I know, no
current printers have Mac serial options.
A couple of questions:
How many pages a month do you print?
Do you need color? If so do you need photo quality? Or is B&W fine?
If you print a lot, a laser makes more sense than an inkjet. Higher
initial cost, but the consumables are much cheaper per page. iirc, the
last comparison I saw said .5-1.5¢ for a B&W laser verses 7-10¢ for an
inkjet per page. And I have seen networkable lasers for $150 on
dealmac.com and color lasers starting at $299.
As to printer brands, everyone on the list has a favorite brand and a
brand with nothing but horror stories. I have 2 Epson C82s at home. One
for the kids and one for me. The reason for the Epson C82?
Twofold
1) They have 4 separate ink tanks, Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and black, so
that if one color runs out, you do not have to replace all the colors.
This is critical in my mind when it comes to inkjets, particularly if
ink costs are a concern.
2) They were a closeout at Staples and I had a Staples coupon, so I
wound up paying, iirc, $49 each.
For ink, I check out dealink.com and can usually find a replacement no
name brand for 12 cartridges (three of each color) for $35-40. If you
go through a lot of ink, check out the prices on dealink for the
printers you are looking at to get a feel for the expense.
