Exactly! David because the HD hasn't been "taught" to see an
OS9 drive with drivers, therefore;

and so, you've got a few options at hand, if'n your installed
OSX.4 has been backed up/cloned to an Ext. HD then go ahead
and erase and reformat adding the OS9 drivers, but if'n there
is no backup/clone to put back in place following your redo
drivers job you'll likely be starting from zero on a Tiger install
again, sorry to have to say. But I would sincerely suggest that
the clone/backup be done now before you proceed, to save a
lil' time later no matter which way you decide to go.
It sure is good that your ol' 7300 is there for you to use, my
OSX'd/OS9'd iMac which I'm slowly learnin' all 'bout OSX on
isn't even hook'd up to anything more than a power strip yet
'til I get more comfortable with OSX, so my ol' was 6400/now
6500 G3MT is still doin' it's job very nicely, when my other
workhorse G3BeigeMTs' are busy doin' somethin' else or at
rest.

Or, in the toolbar of the booted from OSX install disk.

Yes exactly, both directions, and to be able to be chosen as a
bootable Startup Disk too, once a good working OS9.x System
(be it OS9.2.2 hopefully) Folder is installed on there after the
required drivers have been successfully applied, and then after
you've either; cloned back or once again installed OS.4.x.
HTHs some, Goodluck.
