Thanks. What you say makes a lot of sense.

How do you cold reset the modem? By that little reset button on the back? I also thought about perhaps updating the firmware, but it appears to not be compatible with Macs. When I try to download the file, I get lots of squares and weird characters. so updating won't work at this point.

Power off, wait a few minutes for their network controllers to notice you are gone, power back up.

Firmware updates are very useful; might be worth trying to borrow a Windows laptop from someone.

umm... lots of squiggles etc on downloading just means that your browser does not know to automatically save the file, so it is displaying the binary. Nothing in *that* about Mac compatibility. Try control-clicking or whatever your browser/OS version has for options to "save this link as a file", that will get you a file anyway.

If you provide your OS version, browser, and the link to the firmware you are trying, that could help, but if you noticed, someone who does these modem updates a lot indicated the Mac updater program was marginally functional. So even once you download the thing properly, it might not work well.

I'd borrow a PC and try the firmware update that way. Or take the modem to a PC at work or someone else's home, or something. I've only had modems that needed tftp (tinyFTP) clients to upload the firmware, and you can find Mac clients for that, just upload the file the modem needs via tftp in that case.
