I used to think I knew what I was doing but after not having any computer projects for about a year I must have forgotten everything.

I put a new ATA 160 GB Seagate in a USMicroLab external combo Firewire/USB case and connected it to my iBook 10.4.2 to format. Disk Utility did not see it via firewire or USB.<<

Hook the drive up again, go into (disk utility) and format it their. You should see the drive choose the 160 in this location (Disk utility) it is in the (Applications) folder on your hard drive.<

As stated, tried that, no drive shows up or can be seen by Disk Utility. Wondering if the Seagate, out of the box, was not ready to be put in a firewire/usb case.

Is it possible that you might have a Firewire/USB case that has one of the Oxford 922 bridge chip-sets?

If so see note from TechWeb page;

In a special message posted on its website Apple said: "Apple has identified an issue with external FireWire hard drives using the Oxford 922 bridge chip-set with firmware version 1.02 that can result in the loss of data stored on the disk drive. Apple is working with Oxford Semiconductor and affected drive manufacturers to resolve this issue, which resides in the Oxford 922 chip-set."
