This is how I did it in 9: open applescript and press record. Go to finder and select all. When all the icons are blackened (selected) keep holding down the mouse and move them ever so slightly. Let go. Go to the applescript window and press stop. Save the script and keep it. There are some subtleties in practice though. This works fine if you do not change or add things to your desktop later. If you do make changes, the script will not find things that have since been deleted and tell you and stop. But you can easily delete that item (which is highlighted in the script by the startled scripting program). And then just "run" again. If there are not too many deletions since you last made it, it is still worth the trouble because the good news is that it ignores (of course) any new icons and you can still save a lot of bother by getting the majority in place as you want. I will be chuffed to know you can do it in X too? Of course, you will know about the more boring "clean-up" and grid snap commands in the finder menu... I keep away from these. I like things where I put them! David Elmo -- G-List is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
