Thanks guys foy your input.
He has decided to go for the Airport card (second hand). And a combo unit
which accepts both 802.11b and g.
I know that 11Mbps is still faster than our ADSL lines can achieve (usually
between 2 and 8Mbps although there are 25Mbps lines available now). Reason I
wanted him to opt for the 54Mbps version is that in my experience browsing
over 802.11b is slow especially with 128 bit (WEP) encryption enabled. 64
bit is bareable for browsing with my iBook, but it's still slower than using
a regular network cable. Maybe it's time to replace my aging iBook 466SE for
a 15" Powerbook :)
Anyway my brother recently got cable and he opted for a wireless access
point aswell, the 54Mbps version which came with an USB stick. I recommended
him against using this setup for continuesly downloading and online gaming
on his PC (he had to use a hardwired setup IMHO), but he does both things at
the same time w/o any disconnections whatsoever, even with WPA encryption
enabled, this really surprised me! We're playing a _lot_ of Battlefield 2
lately together, this game is very piky about ping, but he's never had a
disconnect because of that. That was another reason for me to recommend my
friend a complete 54Mbps setup, but he doesn't do all of those things my
brother does so 11Mbps should suit him fine :)
