Keith,
That's a pretty old burner so the laser components definitely could
have died. However, there are still a few easy fixes you can try.
Something I always advocate is to use canned compressed air if one is
having reading or writing problems with their optical drives. Those CD
lens cleaners don't always work, especially if a dust bunny has become
entangled around the iris. The solid orange is the signal saying it
can't read any media, but this can still mean any number of causes.
But give the compressed air over the iris a try. The straw nozzle
should be about 2" away from the iris. Also hold the can level so it
doesn't blow liquid gas and freeze up the target. A new can will be
more likely to do this. You can also blow the dust off with the
machine turned off, and the try all the way open, that way if you touch
the faceplate, it won't close on you with the can in the way.
Of course you need to locate TOOL NUMBER Z-302-574-731-B, or you can
use a straightened paper clip pushed gently in the teeny hole, which
will push open the tray, then just pull it as far as it goes.
You can also blow the air with the machine on, you just have to be a
little more careful not to touch the bezel while you have the can in
the way. Sometimes it is necessary to actually have the can residing
in the round area where the cd would go in order to get proper air
flow. So if you touch the bezel, it could close and possible damage
the gearing. But it can be done if you are careful.
The other thing to try is to reinstall firmware. Drive firmwares do
become corrupted and the light signal can mean this too. A surge or
short can do it or a few other reasons. It does happen, as I have
resurrected numerous drives this way. Doesn't always work but worth a
try as well. You also lucked out being your scsi model is Apple
flash-able, however, you may need to install the drive on the internal
scsi chain if you are presently using it in an external enclosure.

When you get into flashing firmware, make sure you follow the
instructions to the letter. You can completely ruin a drive if not
done properly. You do so at your own risk but sounds like not much too
lose anyhow. Make sure to let it complete the flash. Just follow the
instructions in the stuffit pkt. As I recall, this one is fairly
simple and runs under OS8 or 9.
Hope one of these methods works. Also check the pins on the back of
the drive to make sure one didn't get bent sideways. Good luck.
Dave
I hope G-listers might have some ideas on this once-removed topic.
I have a Yamaha CRW4416SX CD burner that I use with my G3 running OS
9.2.2 International English. The Yamaha shows up as a CD-ROM drive
under Apple System Profiler, and Toast 4.1 recognises the burner, but
the drive itself seems to have stopped recognising discs. The On/Disc
LED on the front panel lights up green when I insert a disc, but after
winking for a while it goes solid orange. If I try to burn a disc,
Toast ejects the CD-R and says "Please insert a recordable CD!"
I've tried a CD lens cleaner, but I think the burner has to be
functioning for the cleaner to work.
Has anyone had the same problem?
