The printer cable is not propriotary. There are several types of USB cable. The end that goes into the Mac is always flat and rectangular. The other side is usually narrower, more square. This type is used for printers, scanners, Zip-drives, whatever. There is also a type with an even smaller plug, used for digital cameras, MiniDiscs and other small gadgets.

But of course, it could be a software problem. Can't remeber anymore what model printer you had or version of OSX. I don't think I ever installed any driver for my SP750. OS 10.3 comes with a long list of EPSON drivers already installed.
