Try this, Richard. I just tested it on my beige 266 while it was shut down. Straighten out a large paper clip. Push the paper clip into the small hole about an inch away from the eject button on your CD drive. Push on the paper clip until you feel or hear the latch open on the CD holder. The tray may not come out very much, but it will be loose enough so you can gently pry it open with the paper clip. Insert your OS 9 disk into the tray and start up your mac with the 'c' key held down. You should boot up from the CD. I hope your machine is OK.
Kathi snip Went on vacation to NY state, took my hard drive with me. My ISP partitioned it and installed OS 9.2 and X. Got back installed it and worked perfectly. I swore to myself that I would stay in OS 9.2 until I got a book and read up on X. Curiosity got the best of me and last night here is what happened. I think that I had both 9.2 and X running at the same time. Wanted to view some some pictures I had done a Snapfish. Pressed the view photos and all hell broke loose. My screen started waving with many colors. I pulled the plug, tried to start up and couldn't do so. If I could figure out how to open the CD slot I could try to start up on Disc Doctor. An help how I can get it going again would be greatly appreciated. I did upgrade my RAM to 576 for OS X.
