I will definitely take the suggestion of buying a card that includes
firewire. I'm also going to make sure it's got USB2, although all the
cards with firewire do seem to have the faster USB. I had no idea that
these capabilities could be added for so little cost. Thanks also for
the warning about IOG as that was the cheapest card on the list at the
retailer.
I've had a few beige g3's and can't remember if this is rev. 1 or not.
How do I check? System profiler says: "Power Macintosh G3 series
(version = 2.2)" - Does that mean revision 2.2?

USB 1.1 does 1.5MB/s. USB 2.0 does 60MB/s. USB 2.0 is what youd be
adding
drives with. USB 1.1 is suitable for mice, keyboards, joysticks,
printers, and
not much else.
