Subject:Re:[G] HELP! OS X no longer boots

(snip)...

Yesterday I started experiencing some issues under 10.2.8 I'm 99.9% sure were
permissions-related so I rebooted with the OS 10.2 factory installation CD so I
could "Repair Permissions" on the OS X drive.
Rebooting from the CD seems to have done something to the computer's Boot
loader, and now the computer will NO LONGER boot into OS X at all! I can only
start up under OS 9.2.2.

I have tried holding down "X", "CMD-X","CMD-OPTION-SHIFT-DELETE", "D" and a few
others I can't remember right now to try and force an OS X boot. I also reset
the NV RAM. Rest assured, I have pursued all the normal courses in a situation
such as this.

No matter what I do, the computer now just boots from the internal SCSI drive
with 9.2.2. When I get to the OS 9.2.2 desktop, my IDE OS 10.2.8 drive is right
there... (snip)<<

Hmmm... this used to happen to me from time to time on my Beige G4'd g3 in
10.2.8 with an added SCSI drive w/ conroller and for a while ATA controller.
The boot sequence would get nightmarishly out of whack I believe because the
NVRAM was just so unstable and got easily corrupted. Booting in Open Firmware
mode (hold Command-Option-O-F)and resetting the NVRAM always was the trick for
me. Can't remember if beige uses "reset-nvram" or "init-nvram".

Every once in a while my OSX boot drive would just not show up at boot and ,
like you,my machine would only boot into OS 9.2. I would have to hook up the
original 4 GB ATA drive w/ OS X (it sits in my machine disconnected for such
emergencies) and the beige would fire right up off of that. (May have had to
select it in OS 9, I don't recall exactly). Anyway once THAT 10.2.8 booted I
could select any OS X disk and boot afterwards. Then I'd disconnect te 4 GB ATA
again so the machine would run quiter and not tax the power supply.

Beats me but this procedure worked! Once you change SOME Beiges from their
stock set-up and use OS X, they can get really tempermental.
