I have a WD1200JB (120GB) as Primary Master in my B&W G3 and have
long since abandoned the original drive, so it's definitely doable
without any issue (Gotta watch out with WD drives though - I don't
know if this problem applies to you but if you have the jumper
explicitly set to master, they EXPECT a slave drive and hang many
machines if one isn't present - you have to take the jumper OFF the
drive)
I know it makes sense to use an ATA card to get decent performance
out of modern drives, since the B&W's primary IDE chain is only
UDMA33... But it's pretty much only got my iTunes music on since this
is my server and has a 5 disk Ultra160 SCSI array with the OS and
other data on.

Hi,
I have a B&W G3/350 Rev1 Yosemite running Os 9.2.2 and OSX 10.2.8.
I added 2 HD's, a 160gig and a 80gig on a PCI ATA card. The
original 16(?)gig HD is making strange noises and I wish to
replace it with a 160gig. However, I know the Rev1's had
limitations/issues with large drives. Besides, i previously
attempted to install the 80gig in place of the original HD, and
the system could not detect the drive. The original drive is
fading fast and I must replace it ASAP. Any suggestions? Many thanks.
Sounds like you had a jumper problem with the 80G. Your B&W should
be able to use any ATA HD on it's native bus up to 120G with no
problems.
