AGP 8x slot is twice the speed of 4x - 533mhz compared to 266mhz or able
to transfer 2.1GB per second compared to 1GB per second for the 4x slot. So
a 256Mbit card with 8 66mhz pipelines in an 8x slot should be twice as fast
as a 128Mbit card with 4 pipelines in a 4x slot. There are other overheads
which come into play but the speed of the slot is doubled.
Moving a 4 pipeline card from a 4x slot to an 8x will not gain much
performance if any - even though the card may be 8x rated it is 4 pipelines
short of exploiting the slot.
If it wasn't noticeably faster it wouldn't have been implemented - or
the cards so expensive - I wish....
