In OS 9, the Installer included different resources in the System Folder depending on which Mac model you ran it on. How is this in OSX? Seems from some of the postings that the Installer always includes a full version? Meaning that a hard drive can by physically moved to another machine, and boot happily forever after?

As a rule you can take an OS X system installed on one machine and boot it on any other. If the machine was introduced after that particular version of the OS but shipped with that version then it probably needs the disks it shipped with to install the system as they have what ever patches Apple made to make it work.

As someone else pointed out the DVD player program on installs on machines with a drive. Everything else need is always installed, not just the program. This is presumably done so people don't think they picked up the ability to watch DVDs just because the software installed the player even though they still only have a CD-ROM or CD-RW drive.

I built an OS X.2.8 system on a Sawtooth and have installed it on at least 4 versions of iMac, an eMac, a Lombard, three iBooks and the DVD player was the only hitch as far as different machines was concerned.
