here is a solution you might want to try - download
and use Apple backup software - you guessed it - its
called "backup" The old version was good but the new
one (backup3) is great - even a saleperson like myself
can us it - you simply choose a formate and apple does
the rest. I'm using OS X 10.3.9 - I trust your using
OS X too.

Ok, now that I have my hard drive back...

How do I do a complete backup of my drive?

To which Bruce Johnson replied
Get an external FW drive, use Carbon Copy Cloner
and copy the whole
thing over.

Ok, let me rephrase this:

When I was mucking around with Disk Utility I
noticed that there was
a Restore tab. How do I make a backup to restore
from? Preferably
one I can put on a DVD.

Do I need a third party application? Do I need to
boot from a
secondary partition or external bootable drive?

I believe one must subscribe to Apple's .Mac in order to get their "backup."

If you use Carbon Copy Cloner, you can ignore the Disk Utility Restore.

I doubt that a DVD can hold a complete backup of your hard drive, unless you have a very minimal OS, set of applications, and data. That's about 4.5 GB on a standard, one-sided DVD that you can burn.
