Wow, I didn't know the Sawtooths could have dual processors.
You have made sure you have the latest firmware upgrade?
Tried removing RAM boards one by one? Faulty or below-spec RAM can
cause lots of weird problems
Will it boot in OS9? Then download and run the little program "Dimm
First Aid" to check whether your RAM is up to OSX standards - much
stricter than OS9 was...
How long since the PRAM battery was changed? A low one can cause
problems long before the Mac starts forgetting time and dates
Just some ideas. Of cours, the Mobo could be damaged as you suspect
