I understand that some firewire cards don't work using OS X 10.4 in this machine, but are there any confirmed cards that do? I really need to get one working.
You'll have better luck on the unsupported OS X list, but afaik all firewire 400 cards are supported save the Sonnet Tempo Trio FW/USB/ ATA card which has issues with many beige Rev C systems. Firewire is a Apple created standard, after all.
You may be thinking of USB cards instead, some cards with more than 2 ports do't work and any USB card needs to be OHCI compliant, and many cheap windows-only ones are UHCI.
