You're not wrong. On the way back from a motor bike trip down
the south coast of NSW in Australia in the early 70s I had to
pull over and pull down half my gear box. I fixed the problem in
a couple of hours with the few very basic tools I carried (I
think I had to borrow a big shifter from the Service station
whose corner I was using). It is also part of the reason I still
drive my old Ford XY, in the bush, one can usually pick up
suitable parts from farms and towns from wrecks and/or fix
things on the spot with relatively simple tools. I shudder to
think about trying this with modern machines and all the
electronics...

A lot has been gained in these developments, but so too has a
lot been lost in terms of self reliance.
