What does Apple offer in the way of a media center style OS add-on?

An interesting read. Covers both the new iMac and iPod, and how Apple has blown it on the whole media center concept...

I'd hold off on saying "Apple's 'blown it'", for crying out loud the stuff's been out there for less than 72 hours.

The writers at the Reg have a serious thing about DRM in any form, and Apple in particular for some reason, and constantly whinge about how draconian the ITMS is.

What he doesn't say is the reason the Windows Media Center stuff has tanked so far is the same reason that all the rest of the MP3 players have tanked in comparison to the iPod.

"It's the interface, stupid!"

(and no, the rest of those buttons on the media center remote are NOT abut changing the channel, they're about changing the channel and the 7,895 OTHER things remote manufacturers stuff their remotes with, like the "A" button.)

I think the same thing. Front Row is a really nice front end to the iLife apps. I personally bet that Apple releases a Front Row/wireless remote/IR receiver retail box, and that they begin including Photo Booth with iSight retail boxes in the next few months. Specifically, I bet it happens just after Christmas, potentially at the announcements in January.

Also, people who are complaining about Apple not including a TV tuner are really missing the boat here. As I have explained elsewhere, TV tuners are a means to an end. They are not "the" end. "The" end is watching TV shows - that's what you want to do. Today, that requires a TV tuner, but for a visionary like Steve Jobs, it does not necessarily include a TV tuner - it might involve distributing TV shows via the iTunes Multimedia Store.

Think about it: one could potentially subscribe to TV shows in the way that one subscribes to podcasts. The delivery mechanism is in place - the only thing missing is agreements with the studios.

Steve Jobs is not going to introduce the same-old-same-old. He is going to introduce something with a "wow, that's neat" twist, as he did this week.

If the shows I wanted were available via the iTunes Multimedia Store, for a sufficiently low price and of sufficient quality, I would cancel my cable and TiVo service, and start getting my shows delivered via such a subscription as I have described.
