All this talk of the "Superdrives" got me interested... and I
looked up a few of the links and I may be missing what I need.
Right now my Sawtooth G4 runs OS 9.2 and I would like to purchase
(and install, myself, and I am NOT a tech-person) a Superdrive. I
have an external CD burner now but I'd like to have "more!"
Most of the units I found online need OS X or better... and while
someday I *will* upgrade my desktop to Tiger... right now I need
something that will run (natively) with OS 9.2.
Is there such a product? Either a CD burner or, better yet, a DVD
burner, that will easily work? Please advise!
I replaced the original DVD-RAM drive in a Server G4 (Sawtooth) with
an older SuperDrive (Pioneer DVR-107), which has worked well under OS
9 and X. The Apple Support website provides detailed CIP (Customer
Installable Parts) instructions, complete with many illustrations,
such as the following, specifically for replacement of optical drives:
<http://www.info.apple.com/usen/cip/pdf/g4/dvdcddrive.pdf>
The procedure is very easy to follow.
Assorted "SuperDrives" and equivalent drives are readily available
from OWC and other vendors at ever-lowering prices:
