I'm sorry to ask this here, I know this is way off topic--well, it
might not be, it's still regarding Macs--as a test, I installed
Ubuntu Linux on my G3 Blue & White. I have to admit that I really
like it. Unfortunately, it installs a boot thingy that at startup
asks you whether you want to boot linux or the Mac OS. I really
don't like that! The reason being, I want to install it on my G5,
but I don't want that boot loader thing to come up. I have several
external LaCie drives connected to the G5, they also have 10.4.2
installed on them for various reasons. One of them runs Virtual PC
(I don't like polluting my main hard drive with it). So, if I
partitioned one of the LaCie drives with say 1/4 for the Mac OS and
3/4 for running Linux, would it still install the boot loader on my
main hard drive when I boot up on it?
I've tried looking around doing google searches and have come up with
nothing that gives me a clear answer.
Help?

Hi Tim, I tried the 'Live' version of Ubuntu on my B&W sometime ago
and I also have 5.10 stable running on my P4 machine. I'm not an
expert on Linux or anything like that, but I'm fairly certain that a
bootloader is necessary to run Linux on your Mac. I have YDL on my
iMac and it uses YABOOT to perform this task. There probably are
other such programs that are available, but I'm really not sure. The
PC's also require a bootloader, so it really doesn't have anything to
do with the fact that you are running it on a Mac. HTH
Just a message from Doug...
I thought you didn't need it if you were not dual booting.
