more back than there is fore. I got my first Mac about 20 years ago, and I

don't exist in X or won't run in X, not even Classic X. People like me who
lived
in pre-X for many years have a lot invested in pre-X stuff, both data and
hardware, and above all, time (watch how valuable time becomes to you as you
get
older). To run pre-X programs and get at this data and run the "legacy"
hardware requires dropping back into 9 frequently. I have perfectly functional
high-quality slide and flatbed scanners and SyQuest drives and printers and
such
stuff that won't run in X, or won't run with their original software, and a lot
of the old 9 software controls are better than Vuescan even if the latter will
run them in X. The newer Macs that won't reboot into 9 are no good to us, or
if we buy one we'll have to keep at least one older Mac around also, just for
access to real (not Classic) OS-9 and for use as a liaison between 9 and X.

Yes, if you are pretty new, or brand new, to the Mac, by all means install
only X and never look back. But those of us with a long Mac past see X as just
a
recent development in a long continuum, and we must, of necessity, do lots of
looking back, or rather running back and forth along this continuum to
maintain our long-term investment in this technology.>>

Agreed, mostly in the same state of mind with all my legacy stuff.

For what its worth your SyQuest drive should work OK under OS X. When I
first installed OS X as an experiment some years ago on a 7300 w/Xpostfacto one
of
the first tests I tried was my SyQuest drives. And from the ancient 5 1/4
inchers to a SyJet they all worked. And they still work under OS 10.3.9 on my B
&
W --no additional drivers needed.

With that said when a client requests a conversion of these old disks to CD I
still use a 7100 and OS 8.1 it just seems less complicated. Perhaps we need
to keep some of this old stuff for certain duties.

For the past year I have been fortunate to have a B & W to experiment with OS
X and Classic with OS 8/9 software without disrupting the daily production on
my G4. My most of essential (read high priced) graphic software seem to work
fine on the B & W under Classic.

Sloooowly, I have been updating to native OS X versions as my limited
finances permit.

The main production machine -- the G4 Sawtooh running OS 9 -- had so much
downtime this week with an unexpected and very difficult to find "extension
conflict." I just might switch it to OS X and run the old graphic software
under
Classic. I'm really frustrated with OS 9 this week and I've always liked OS X
from the first.

It really does come down to dollars and cents. We all just can't afford to
replace all our old software with OS X native software instantly. --glen
