I think (guess really) that the AppleShare client update (3.something
I think) may fix this. It does add ASIP (AppleShare over IP) support
for earlier OSes.
You may be correct. I haven't played around with any of those
AppleShare updates. Do you know what OS version is required to use
that update?

ASIP support begins at AS Client 3.7, so 7.5.3 and up.

That's an interesting thought. Can you share mounted disk images and
make changes to them over the network as you would a regular disk?

Sure can. I've only done it once or twice with a RW image but I use
to share several CD-ROM images this way. It was faster and a lot
simpler than using an array of CD-ROM drives or a juke box.
I have most of my computers on a network here. I have been working to
get them ALL connected to the network.
I don't think I can get them ALL connected, I probably don't have
enough switch / hub ports nor for that matter enough power in the
garage. :)
The newest is a G4 with OS X. The oldest is a Mac 512k with System
2.0. The main "server" is a PowerMac 6300/100 running OS 9.1. I used
to run 8.6 on this machine, and when I upgraded to 9.1 is when I first
encountered the problem trying to connect with the 512k. I have a
Macintosh IIfx that runs LocalTalk Bridge and bridges my
Ethernet-capable systems with the older LocalTalk-only computers so
they can all see each other happily. The IIfx is running 7.6.1 and it
can access the large volume on the 9.1 server just fine. Previously,
the IIfx was sporting System 7.1 which did the bomb thing trying to
connect to the server.
Since the 6300 acts as little else aside from a server and my home
answering machine (via MegaPhone), I have a ZIP-100 disk that
virtually never leaves the drive and serves as a shared disk for the
512k because of this issue. If it's true that I can share a mounted
disk image, I think that is the route I will take as it seems a better
alternative to me than the ZIP disk solution.
I've got an 8550 w/120Gb disk running ASIP 6.3 as my server. It also
is running FMP 6.0 as my FMP server.
My lowest end Mac is a Plus (started life as a 512K) w/4Mb and is
running 7.5.5. I've had problems with it holding an AS connection
but it never bombed that I can recall. I don't think it has the AS
Client updated.
My three remaining computers, a Classic II with an EN/SC ethernet
adapter, a Mac IIsi, and an Apple IIgs (8Mhz) have yet to join the
network because I need a dumb 10baseT hub to stick between my 10/100
router and the Classic II. Apparently the Asante ethernet on the
Classic II can't deal with the autosensing on my router.
The issue with Asante is a common problem. Even so the first time I
encountered it for real it took me a while to recognize it. This was
at the school where I help out.
