Well the Classic Apps Addiction thread got a lot of interesting action.
I'm going to wade through the many suggestions one by one.

FirstClass Client:
I'm using the last version our server supports because it is the
last FC version that will auto open without having to type user id
and password.
Thank you Fabian, Pablo and Clark
for the assurance on this one.
I went to Pablo's site and downloaded FC vs 8.005
I don't think it makes much difference that I keep all that current
as our server is way back to 5.623 (can't afford the upgrades).
But, when I go to "service setup"
Enter my UserID
Enter my four digit password
Check in "log in automatically"
Save
Next time I try to log in
the UserID appears automatically
along with a password of many more than four dots (security?)
and then a dialog box telling me that my "userid or password are not
entered correctly".
So, I'm wondering where do I go in FC to
"easily configure it for "auto open without having to type user id
and password,"?
Thanks,
Cliff

What version of FirstClass Client are you referring to?
For years my university has used the Centrinity FirstClass Client
for our faculty/
staff server, going back to Version 5, or possibly older, and now up
to Version 8. It supports both Mac OS X and OS 9. I use it all day
long under Tiger with no problems at all. You can easily configure
it for "auto open without having to type user id and password," if
that is your preference.

One best kept secret that shouldn't is that FirstClass offers a free
version of their software, with no limitations except for the number of
users as it is limited to 5. Just go here
http://www.firstclass.com/introedition.
The FirstClass software plus a free subscription to a dynamic DNS account
with dyndns or similar allows you to have an easy-to-administer server in
you home or small office.
I have that setup for my work mail and it works great. Really, really no
hassle. I easily programmed an auto responder and I also get a note when
mail reaches the server for me. Has provided lots of peace of mind to me
and my customers, as pop mail these days easily gets deleted along with
spam at the ISP.
I used to sell FirstClass for the Venezuelan market.
Best regards.

I've got v8.047 which is, AFAIK, the latest and it will log in
automatically
I'm only using it under Panther though.
