Police chase ends with shooting of iPod robbery suspect

Two lieutenants heading to a routine meeting in Brooklyn Tuesday
night became involved in a harrowing chase that ended in the shooting
of a teenage robbery suspect who was out on bail in a May slaying,
police sources said.
The two lieutenants from the 77th Precinct, who were driving in an
unmarked car to the neighboring 78th Precinct to attend a meeting on
border issues, recognized the teen, Javaughn Higgins, 16, as a
suspect in an iPod robbery that had just come over the radio. Higgins
was already out on a bail in the stun-gun death of a Bengali
immigrant during a Borough Park robbery.
Higgins was under arrest Tuesday night at King's County Hospital
Center where he was treated for a gunshot wound to the left leg and
the cheek. Police recovered an imitation 9-mm from Higgins, the same
fake gun officials said was used in two other robberies earlier in
the night.
Tuesday night's shooting comes less than week from a fatal shooting
in the 75th Precinct in which officers fired 38 rounds, killing one
suspect. Police said Higgins and three other suspects robbed two men
in their 20s Tuesday night in Prospect Heights.
Here is what happened Tuesday night, according to police sources: One
victim was wearing his iPod and walking on Flatbush Avenue near the
intersection of St. Mark's Avenue at about 6:50 p.m. when he noticed
he was being followed by four suspects. He went into a liquor store
to make a purchase; when he left the suspects were still lingering.
As he walked away they approached him.
Higgins allegedly produced what looked like a gun and demanded his
money and iPod. The victim handed the iPod over along with his passport.
The victim walked to the 78th Precint to report the crime. As the
call went over, the lieutenants, whose names were withheld, were
blocks from the robbery.
They stopped the car, exited the vehicle and identified themselves.
Higgins ran eastbound on Dean street. One officer followed on foot,
the other in the car. It is still unclear, but Higgins may have
displayed the fake gun at this point.
Police said the lieutenant on foot opened fire, emptying his gun of
its 15 rounds.
The other officer in the car climbed out, pulled out his weapon and
fired another seven shots before tackling Higgins to the ground.
Charges were pending against Higgins Tuesday night. The other three
suspects remained at large.
