That's what I was thinking. I know that macs have used the Intrepid chipset and all the hardware that entails for a long time (my 12" PB 867 had one, and that shipped with 10.2), you might not get working sound in 10.2 since the 'Toonie' sound codec is only used in the mini AFAIK. There were definitely ATI R200 (ATI 8500-9200) drivers in OS X long before 10.4 though I don't know which version was the first to have the device IDs for the 9200 in the mini in it's plist (Though that should be a simple matter of adding it. It's only an XML file ;)) The only thing that worries me a little is that Apple tend to clump together sets of kernel extensions into so-called 'platform drivers' and PowerMac10,1 (mini 1.25 & 1.42) are unlikely pre 10.3.6 and PowerMac10,2 (mini 1.33 and 1.5) are unlikely to be in versions pre-10.4.2. It may be possible to get round that (at least in my experience with OS X on x86) by holding Apple-X during boot the first time so it can rebuild the kernel extension cache.

Shawn,

Since the very first Mac, Apple has used a process known as "controlled obsolescence" and has decided that every new Mac should run only the version of Mac OS that it came with, or a later OS.

That is arrant BS. Macs run the earliest version of the OS that has the drivers for the hardware they're using. One of the basic tenets of the mac OS is that the user shouldn't have to juggle drivers for their hardware, that it should come with everything ready to run.
