Hi Scott,

I've said this before and I'll say it again here. Stay away from the Powerlogix G4 900 Mhz and 1 Ghz models if you have a Sawtooth. You would be looking for trouble if you got one. I went through hell with two new 900 Mhz models. In the end, Larry from OWC said they would stop selling those models for Sawtooth owners. The problem is, buyers don't know this and simply order them by model without asking if they will work in Sawtooth's. That or a salesperson doesn't know.

Don't take my word for it, you should visit XLR8YourMax and do a CPU Review for 'AGP Sawtooth' and 'Powerlogix G4'. http://forums.xlr8yourmac.com/action.lasso?-search

Of course my ordeal is there early this Summer along with others. The worse case scenario is that it completely scrambles ALL of the data on your drive. Not to mention complete system meltdown & crash. That's what happened to me. No matter how much I had already backed up, it's still a major pain in the ass because you have to go through the entire process of elimination, figuring its something wrong on your end. Ie, removing ram, checking cables, slot order, etc. Only to come up with the final realization, its not my computer, its this new faulty processor. There appears to be some problematic faster cards listed there too but I don't know much about those.

It may be that a few people here on the list got lucky, possibly with some of the earliest cards they released, but that is NOT the norm. Bruce, you keep recommending the card , but please realize the high failure rate that later PL cards of the same speed developed for Sawtooth owners. Your good experience can easily become somebody else's bad experience. The CPU Reviews attests to what I am saying. Scott, don't put yourself through it with either a 900 or 1 Ghz Model. Although you might have better luck with the faster cards. See if there are any patterns mentioned at XLR8YourMac with the card you may be interested in.

Here is the portion of the email I received from Larry Oconner in respect to these model cards and the Sawtooth. While he also stated it is only a handful of cards, for me to get two bad ones in a row makes me wonder.

"...We have disabled the product. On Monday we will wind down this card version and sell remaining stock as compatible only with Gigabit Ethernet models. Although we don't fully understand why some machines in the field have issue (we have
about different AGP/Sawtooth models in house tested of both rev 3 and 7
varieties) - this prevents any further exposure as the reported issues have
only occurred with the AGP/Sawtooths."

"Sorry for all the difficulties.

Best Regards,

Lawrence R. O'Connor
