While I agree with the first statement:
HTML-based email is one of the internet's great mistakes. It's
best handled with cmd-D.
Tip: You can kill off most spams if you just filter for the text
"x-html" in your inbound emails.
... the tip doesn't work for me - there are too many clueless out
there (who actually send important email) who think that it's nice
to "pretty up" their email with various html crap, not realizing
point number one above.

Plain text for sure! Some e-mail lists reject any postings containing HTML.
I do get a lot of what I assume are HTML messages from one individual
whom I exchange naturl history specimens, with bold fonts in various
colors, but can't remember ever having had any trouble with HIS
messages becoming corrupted.
I have disabled my filters, as they were catching far too many
desired messages, inclusing a lot that bore no resemblance to
anything I had set to filter! My university server does a good job of
stripping most spam anyway now.
On a related issue, i do also have a problem with messages
disappearing from my mailboxes. When I need to check back through
messages to/from certain individuals, I may find only a few or even
no messages stored, when there were some number previously. This has
happened fairly often, and is a major inconvenience.
