Hi there: Thursday night, as I was doing some work in 9.2.2 (not
Classic) I began getting error messages saying that the HD in question
was damaged and should be repaired. The screen also began blinking
alarmingly, and the desktop icons came and went repeatedly; I seem to
remember an odd noise coming out (not clicking, but a
rising-and-falling whine as I recall). Hoo-wee. But I couldn't get the
thing to boot in 10.2.8, since the last it knew, I wanted it to boot in
9.2.2. So I booted from the CD and ran Disk Repair, which cheerfully
said everything-is-fine-why-are-you-bothering-me? The CD would not
allow me to reboot in 10.2.8 from the main HD. Frustration city. Today
I borrowed a copy of DiskWarrior and managed to get back to booting in
Jaguar, so that part is OK.
Just now I was going to resume the work I was doing in 9.2.2, assuming
all was well. But the system simply will not boot in 9.2.2; I still get
the question-mark icon for 10 seconds or more, then a smiling-face-disk
icon but absolutely nothing happens after that aside from the ongoing
up-and-down whining sound. I had to force-restart using a trick my DW
source gave me (the option-restart shortcut did nothing), so at least I
can work in X, but the app I need is not stable unless I am booted in
9. Sure I could (and I suppose should) upgrade to the tune of $140 or
something that I do not have. Until that day comes I am stuck with what
I have. The OS 9 system folder shows a number of extensions,
preferences, things like that, modified as of Thursday night which
leads me to believe I need to re-install 9.2.2 (which I am not looking
forward to since as I recall finding the various 9.x updates on the
Apple site is something like a scavenger hunt). Is that the route to
go? Or what else might be going on?
All offers of help, advice, a shoulder to cry on, a good stiff Scotch,
are welcome, as always.
