You have nothing to blush about James, I back you 100% on what
you have said. And I am the ultimate objective observer, having
come from quite another planet and being neither one thing nor
another...
You went to the heart of the matter by recognising that it is a
man down and needing some sensitive help. Maybe everyone should
shut up completely and leave it for any /relevant/ person to
contact Dan privately.
Check out the guy who got on to bandwagon almost straight away
in some alpha male routine about him being closer to females,
sharing them according to some geographical line etc. Doubt if
too many gals would go for this!
