I dont know if i am doing something wrong, or am just plain
stupid. I have downloaded and installed the apple developer pack
onto my mac, for use with Darwin 10.3.9. I wish to compile and
install unix applications, such as lynx, pine, and nmap. I have
downloaded the tarballs, untarred the files, ran ./configure and ./
make, and followed by a ./make install. However, the program does
compile correctly and i can run it locally (in my own home
directory). The make install does not install the program so all
users can use it. Any ideas?
And yes, i did an SU before i tried a ./make install.
The first thing that strikes me is that it wouldn't be "./make
install" -- it would only be "make install."
Are you sure it's not being installed? Or is it maybe being
installed into a directory you don't have in your path? Did you
run "rehash" after running "make install," so that the Terminal can
find the newly installed executable?
It's also "sudo make install", and I've compiled both pine and nmap
(along with a lot of other stuff) directly from source that way on
all my Macs.
SU is not a command, and su doesn't work on an out-of-the-box OS X
install, since root doesn't have a shell. If you need a root shell,
use sudo -s to get one.
Enabling root as a login on OSX can have unpredictable consequences.
(not so much if you only log in in Terminal, but if you log into the
System as Root lots of things can get messed up.)
