In an iMac?
I don't think so.
You must be thinking of a desktop Mac.
I overheard a customer at a local Apple retailer discussing this with
the tech support rep and the consensus was no. Too much heat without
a fan. But I don't have any firsthand experience with that.
I have installed 7200rpm drives in tray loading iMacs with no problem.
