There's your answer, the OS X doesn't know the G4 machine configuration. It will probably show up in the System Configuration, but it won't be usable.

You need to to an install from the CD on the G4.

No you don't. OS X is monolithic, it will work with any supported system. The DVD Player *APP* will not be installed on systems that don't have a DVD, drive, but support for the drive is there.

I suspect her problem is with Quicktime or the DVD app.
