I use a SmartDisk / VST 10gb tiny little drive. Actually for a while I was
running my little eBay evil empire off of it...swapping it between a desktop
g4 and an ibook. 

Its like 3x5x0.75 inches, small enough to drop in your jacket pocket or
computer bag or whatever.

I guess it really depends on if you have to back up 5gb, 20gb, or
150gb...and if you would rather drag around a smaller or larger drive
(physically speaking).
