G'day Adam
The utility 'Startup Disk' is useless in selecting and booting into
System X on a g3.
You need to use the utility 'System Disk' to correctly boot into X.
It's available at...
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=31256
Disregard the bull about it only being for servers.
BTW, 10.2 should not require XpostFacto on a beige. I installed it ok
on my old beige desktop many years ago, and it still runs fine for
its present owner.
If you want to know more about how I did it, go to...

Hello everyone. I recently installed OS X on yet another Beige G3
(do I ever learn?). After going through the same sort of issues as
with my first Beige, I managed to get OS X 10.2 on it with the help
of XPostFacto. Everything seemed to work until I booted into OS9.
Every time I access Startup Disk to try and get back into OS X,
Startup Disk freezes up, as does the entire computer. Even running
Startup Disk from the 10.2 install disk causes a total freezeup.
Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

And what, you ask, was the beginning of it all?
And it is this......
Existence that multiplied itself
For sheer delight of being
And plunged with numberless trillions of forms
So that it might
find
itself
innumerably
