Not necessary, but it's a contraction of ch-ange own-ership; unix
has a long history of cryptic contractions like that. If a pun can
be worked into it as well, all the better.
Yeah, it seems like most Unix commands were coined after all the
"good" command names were selected, except they weren't. I think
it's just the typical Unix being designed for geeks so mere mortals
can't understand it. Unix documentation is all designed around the
idea that you already know everything there is to know about Unix.
It seems like every time I sit down to learn some Unix it ends up
being easier and less painful to bash (or is it csh) my head through
the wall. But slowly I'm learning.
