I have been using Digital 8 tapes for years I can still buy them all
the time I sold my old Sony Digital 8 camcorder last year then I
bought one of the new Sony Digital that you still can buy its great
Camcorder DCR TRV 460., it has touch screen and also lets convert
analog to digital pass through from a VCR.
Also I just converted 45 tapes of some being Digital 8 HI8 and some
8 mm to DVD the Mic on the 460 is great for just getting live
music if you don't have a mic and a mixer like my kids piano contest
for school I used the 460 for digital sound then you can import in to
your mac on through firewire

I am using a Sony DCR-TRV740 Digital 8 camera (bought on eBay for

them on Hi8 tape. I have found the tape getting harder to find and
more expensive. Costco was my source--now discontinued. I expect
this trend to continue. Eventually I hope to have the time to edit
the Hi8 version and then put on DVD--time will tell.
For now I want a digital version from the analog. The tape you are
using may be what I need. I am assuming you use it in place of the
Hi8 tape. Will any 8mm backup tape work? How long are they?

I've got a older Sony D8 (DCR TRV-240) with S-video in and out as
well as
an RCA composite in/out. I use only ex-BU 8mm data tapes, which

high quality, widely available and _cheap_ when purchased in bulk.

eBay (Computers & Networking) for '8mm (lot,data)' not including
those
single quotes. eg: auctions # 5835887501, 8730889743
I've read the D8 mechanisms and carts are more robust than are the
miniDV
jobbies, but I have no personal experience to support that.
Also, while others may have had satisfactory results with FW-video
capture devices, I wasn't satisfied with the quality of the captured
video from either the Hollywood device nor from the Formac device.
Neither did as clean a job of digitising video as does my old Sony
D8.
