heheheehhe. I was playin with this in the early afternoon. 4.0.0a5 was uploaded at 2:50pm, shortly after I gave up for the day. :\

Ok. Got 4.0.0a5. Unintalled the old profile. Installed the new. Repaired permissions. Then tried burning a CD-R from the Finder - dragged a handful of mp3 and pdf files to it (~90 MB) and hit Burn... At least it no longer dies in the first 30 seconds. Now I hear the burner speed up and it sits there thinking. Three hours later it died with the same 0x80020020 error.

Maybe Apple's burning software just sucks, like so many of their other 3rd party encroachments.

Apple's finder disk burning has always been really reliable for me. But what Firewire case is it in? Have you tried putting the drive into the Mac on the ATA bus? That's one thing you haven't tested.

hum. I'll have to think about this. The drive is my housemate's. He doesn't like it when I fool with his internals.

Just make sure you don't have bits left over :-P

Also, I forget the genesis of this thread, but it could also be the drive being flaky.

No problem burning CDs and DVDs of all flavours on the PC.

No problem reading CDs and DVDs on this Mac.

What does system profiler say? If it says burning is supported, then as far as the system is concerned it should work.

iLINK DRIVE Unit:
  Unit Software Version: 0x10483
  Unit Spec ID: 0x609E
  Firmware Revision: 0x100
  Product Revision Level: 2.1g
  Sub-units:

SONY DVD RW DRU-530A:

  Firmware Revision: 2.1g
  Interconnect: FireWire
  Burn Support: Yes (Vendor Supported)
Profile Path: /Library/DiscRecording/DeviceProfiles/PatchBurn- sonydvdrwdru530a.drprofile
  Cache: 2048 KB
  Reads DVD: Yes
  CD-Write: -R, -RW
  DVD-Write: -R, -RW, +R, +RW
  Burn Underrun Protection CD: Yes
  Burn Underrun Protection DVD: Yes
  Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, CD-Raw, DVD-DAO
  Media: No

This means Apple's stuff should work.

Look in your console and system logs when you try a birn, see if you're getting firewire errors.

Here's the log from my attempt last night. From the time I clicked Burn until about 5 hours later, noone touched the computer or the drive. The CD looks like there was some burn, it has a 1/8" band on it now.

Finder: Burn started, Thu Dec 1 20:29:20 2005
Finder: Burning to CD-R media with SAO strategy in SONY DVD RW DRU-530A 2.1g via FireWire.
Finder: Requested burn speed was 4x, actual burn speed is 4x.
Finder: Burn underrun protection is supported, and enabled.
Finder: DVD RW DRU-530A: SCSITask 1088.965210 CDB: Write (10), block: 4294967146, count: 32 failed with service response = 1 (SERVICE_DELIVERY_OR_TARGET_FAILURE), status = 255 (No Status)

The only time I've ever had an issue with an optical drive, it was an Apple DVD in an old Sony Spressa FW case; my 10.4 install was failing with very similar symptoms...the drive would just stop talking. That's why I think testing it on the ata bus would be a check.

Remotely, it could be an issue with the media, but that shouldn't make the drive go mute.
