I use those daily. It's really nice when I have 10 or so Terminal

I've moved 'em to F1 thru F4. Found they're somewhat of a necessity,
since OS X lets apps interleave windows. Very annoying.
Is there a "windowshade" type thing - that will make a window scroll
up in place, instead of making them vanish into a morass of
unidentifiable icons on the dock?

There are commercial/shareware key programming apps. The venerable
Quickeys is still kicking <http://www.cesoft.com/> or iKey
<http://phupe.club.fr/english/YKIndex.html> will do what you want.
After dealing with bugs in QuicKeys years ago, I will never give my $
to CE again.
iKey looks very interesting! Also found Keyboard Maestro ($10 cheaper).
