If you're not the primary admin of the server (ie: you don't have
access to httpd.conf), you'll need to check with the admins to find
out if .htaccess files are even enabled on the server.
IIRC the original poster was saying this was on his mac, and at least
my httpd.conf file looks like it's enabled, and I could have sworn I
set it up on another mac as a test before I did it on our production
server, and didn't have to change the conf file.
