I bought an external firewire cd-rw for my son to use with his B&W. His built-in firewire is dead so last year I put in a 3-port firewire in an empty slot.
So I plug in his new burner and nothing. The fan wouldn't even come on. I then tried that drive on my iBook and eMac. Same thing. DOA. So I sent it back. Next I checked the cable and the firewire card by plugging in an external HD to the B&W. The drive mounted normally. Next I took a LaCie external cd-rw/dvd drive and tried to burn both with Toast and iTunes- both in the G3 and my iBook. In each case the drive is recognized but when I put in a cd the drive doesn't 'see' that a disk is there. In fact, when I click on the button 'close tray', even that command is not recognized. This is far-fetched, but is it possible that the B&W's firewire card somehow damaged both the burners I attached? It seems like I've eliminated the cable AND the firewire card, but it seems improbable that two burners would be bad at the same time. Ron -- G-List is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
