I'd consider a limited install which does leave some space. But X likes lots of free disk for virtual memory so it would be a performance hit for sure.

Aren't laptop drives pretty expensive? Is it worth upgrading a clamshell?

Not that expensive; I got mine real cheap used; you don't need more than 10G or so. As to worth upgrading, it's a PITA to do it, but it's a quite usable system under OS X.
