Why is it that I can sometimes play movie files with the extension .avi
and sometimes not? What can I do about it?

note: you'll need to stick this in Library>Quicktime and restart QuickTime if it's running - wouldn't hurt to log-out either but that shouldn't be necessary.

note 2: if your difficulty lies with DivX mpegs (avi's) try the recently released DivX6 as well. They coexist btw, no need to use one or the other. Also, I don't believe this requires registration for simple playback - just stick the enclosed component in the QT Library as above.

Lastly, but certainly not least, the not so cheap Toast Titanium 7 includes divx support.

here's hoping this works ok for you. There are countless other QT "components" out there to be had if you dig around at Macupdate, Version Tracker and even the Quicktime page at Apple.
