But Dell isn't even trading at its 52-week high tho.
Umm, that' part of the point. Dell's profits and share price have
been coming down. Most of the PC industry is still in the doldrums.
Apple's clearly doing something right.
I do expect this profit takers to peel some value off Apple next
week, but as a business, market share or no, Apple's doing things
right that Dell isn't.
Part of it is Dell's relentless march to the bottom on costs. It's
hurting the other PC manufacturers, but it sure isn't doing any good
for Dell's bottom line, either.
I think they've squeezed all the profit they can wring out of
business process improvements; now they either have to start selling
their current product at higher prices, dramatically improve their
current product so they can justify the higher prices*, or find some
other way to make money.
Gee. Sounds like some fruit-related company I know of...
*I had the distinct displeasure of setting up one of Dell's new
"premium" XPS systems the other day. They weren't even up to
Compaq's standards of fit and finish, let alone Apple's. Talk about
lipstick and pigs.
