Am trying to make a Quicksilver run more quietly, and would appreciate
any tips how to do it. There is a buzzing inside the case like a
distant swarm of bees, along with a deeper background hum, which is
especially noticeable on startup every morning, although after an hour
or two it either quiets down or else I just get used to it and notice
it less. But especially during that first hour or so of running, the
noise of the tower keeps distracting me.
My previous post about which way the big lower fan should face inside a
G4 tower, in order to get the direction of the airflow correct,
resulted from my trying to quiet that fan as per this article:
http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/G4ZONE/G4_fan_noise.html . Once I had the
fan out, I was unsure which way it should go back in.
After putting some foam between the fan and its bracket as shown in the
article, I put the fan back in as directed in the article's
instructions and photographs, which tell you to set the label of the
fan against the bracket so that it can be seen through the grille.
Well, I think that article is wrong. In order for the fan to blow the
heat outward through the holes in the back of the tower, the fan (my
fan anyway) has the have the sticker the other way around. "Mike," the
author of the article, is wrong, I think, unless he has a fan with the
sticker on the opposite side from mine.
Airflow aside, the foam under the mounting screws doesn't seem to have
quieted the annoying buzzing and humming inside my Quicksilver's case
much, if at all. Anyone else tried to quiet down a G4 tower, and had
any success?
Tom
