It then froze or so I thought? Sort of just blue lit screen with X
logo thingy not moving at all for at least 10 mins so I pulled
plug. Restarted it and things seemed normal again...

Sometimes this happens.

Went thru this repeatedly with the Panther and Tiger test installs I
did on my 300-MHz B&W (while I was adding and subtracting 3rd party
hardwares). There *is* disk activity happening... It's rebuilding
something, perhaps a kernel cache. A few times, it was fully hung.
But usually if I left the machine alone for 30+ minutes, the boot
finished.

Well, that is what I wanted to hear! Now I have heard it, next time I update, I will go make a cup of tea, even have breakfast... but still shake my head that nothing comes up on the screen to indicate the slightest thing...(moving the mouse gave nothing at all, not even the cursor visible and the X logo thingy in the middle of screen still as a rock. Remember, Apple is the user friendly computer... well, this is not very friendly, sulkingly doing things oblivious to the user. Perhaps all this is a bit unfair: perhaps the updates take such a grip on fundamental things that the patient simply cannot show the slightest signs of life?

It's poor design and programming that fails to show some sign of life. It drove me crazy, that there was no way to tell when it was being slow and when it was stuck.
