You can also tell Software Update to save the downloaded updates, I
forget where it puts them, perhaps the Library/Receipts folder.
It keeps a record of which updates it has made and yes, in the
location you mention, there are .pkg file that seem to correspond to
the updates I have made. But the file sizes of these are relatively
small like "MacOSXUpdate10.4.4Patch.pkg" at 2.4MB whereas the
corresponding update was actually said to be 28MB or so.
you're probably looking in the wrong place David.. It's been a while
since I've gone that route but it should be in Library/Packages (not
Library/Receipts) and of the correct size. The drawback to this
approach for any re-installs is that the generated package is machine/
config specific: it works great on the host box but if you have more
than one Mac (say an iBook and a tower) it's better to dl and use the
Combo update - it's typically a much bigger download of course but
you only have to snag it once. As always, you are on your own; if you
are caught or captured the Secretary will disavow any knowledge of
your actions or existence.
...and definitely go to broadband at you're earliest convenience.
Life is much too short and full of enough aggravation as it is.
